What is it?

This team-based competition is a fun opportunity to apply your creative innovation skills to a big, real world challenge. The theme for this year’s Mines Innovation Competition is “Sustainability in Natural Resource Industries.”  No mining or oil and gas expertise or knowledge is required. The competition kicks off with a one-day Entrepreneurship and Innovation Workshop on Saturday January 21st  from 9:00am–4:00pm.  In this workshop you will learn about the Mining and Oil and Gas industries and several areas of opportunity for innovation, brainstorm innovation ideas, formulate and iterate low-resolution prototypes, and prepare and present your team’s idea/innovation to a panel of judges. Winners in several categories will receive prizes, and the teams with the best ideas will each have the opportunity to continue to work on your idea into the spring 2017 semester with $1,000 in financial support and enrollment in a free, one-hour technical elective.

The Saturday,  January 21st  workshop is about creativity and innovation. So, please join us! Come and show off your creativity, compete for prizes, and have fun!

How Do I Participate?

The first step is to register for the January 21st Entrepreneurship and Innovation Workshop. You can register as an individual or as a team. If you register as an individual, we will assist you in forming a team. You can also gather some Mines student friends or classmates (team size should be between three and five students) now and register as a team.

How Do I Register?

Go to the Mines “My Idea” website ( and navigate to the Competitions page where you will find the Mines Innovation Challenge. Register by Thursday January 19th. Complete the short on-line form and submit – you are registered!

How Will the Competition Work?

The Mines Innovation Challenge has been developed to give your team the opportunity to identify innovative ideas that may improve the environmental, safety, development, or closure of mining or oil and gas operations. All Mines students, regardless of the academic discipline you are studying, have the ability to generate ideas and solutions to these challenge areas. In the Saturday, January 21st workshop all participants will hear from mining and oil and gas experts about the relevant areas of activity. Teams will be given time to ideate innovative solutions in an area they find of interest and create simple, low-resolution prototypes. Teams will also receive training during the day on how to build a short presentation, and then “pitch” their idea to a panel of judges. Prizes will be awarded in several categories during and at the end of the day. Up to six winning teams will be selected to have the opportunity to continue beyond the Saturday’s activities and work on their idea into the spring 2017 semester with additional support and a (free) one credit independent study class.

What if My Team is selected to Continue in the Challenge?

If your team is one of teams selected to advance in the Innovation Challenge beyond Saturday January 21st, your team will be assigned a CSM mentor and will be given access to $1,000 that will help you refine your prototype, team-build, attend workshops on business/entrepreneurship, and tour active mining operations. Your team will also be invited to display your prototype at the Western Mining Convention held in Denver in February as well as participate in the Mines Innovation Awards reception during the spring semester.
